Grapevine Raffia Basket

This basket is hand-woven by women working with Uganda Crafts, an artisan group that provides single mothers widowed by the HIV/AIDS epidemic the opportunity to earn income weaving at home. Made from raffia and banana stalk with a loop for hanging attached along the bottom edge of the base of basket. Due to the handcrafted nature of our products, slight variations in color and pattern enhance authenticity.

Since 1995, our partner Ten Thousand Villages, has worked with Uganda Crafts an organization that markets crafts for artisans and provides training in quality control, design and marketing. The organization also owns a retail store that provides employment for people with physical disabilities. One of the missions of Uganda Crafts is to provide hope to disabled people, youth and those suffering from HIV/AIDS. In addition to training, employees receive health benefits, emergency loans and transportation. Uganda Crafts employs approximately 300 artisans in five workshops or cooperatives, 85 percent of them women.
